A Wave Glider robot from Liquid Robotics has set a world record for the longest distance traveled by an autonomous vehicle. "Papa Mau" set off from California back in November of last year and just arrived safely in Australia after a 9,000 mile (16,688 kilometers) trip. Liquid Robotics says the robot had to deal with sharks, gale force storms, and the East Australian Current to arrive at its destination, during which it collected valuable oceanographic data from regions never remotely surveyed before; the findings have been made available for free to anyone who registers on the team's website. A second robot is scheduled to make it to Australia early next year, and though one robot has to return to Hawaii for repair, another is currently en route to Japan.
