Metro.co.uk: Female humpback whales snapped hunting for fish in spectacular pics
Surely this proves ladies who lunch don’t necessarily have to be rich, well-dressed... or slim.
These female humpback whales meet up at the same spot every year to hunt shoals of herring.
And there’s even waiter service in their regular Pacific ocean haunt.
One or two of the 45-tonne mammals plunge more than 150m (500ft) underwater and blow a ‘bubble net’ – up to 75m (245ft) wide – to catch their prey so the rest of the 12-strong group can feed.
The pictures were taken by Seattle-based wildlife photographer Cornforth, who managed to get to within 9m (30ft) of the giants in Frederick Sound, in the Alexander Archipelago, south-east Alaska.
He has followed the whales for a total of 12 weeks over four years, although it took him three days and a 190km (120 miles) boat trip to track them down on his most recent trip.
However, the 39-year-old insists it’s all worth it.
He said: ‘They are incredible mammals. I hope people get a sense of just how glorious it is to be in their presence.’
